Markham is filled with many popular destinations — Pacific Mall has dozens of dining options, Main Street Unionville offers charming shops and trails, and First Markham Place is a destination for shopping and entertainment. Now there’s a new urban landmark in the city: downtown Markham.

Let’s breakdown a few ways that downtown Markham is becoming the hottest new urban destination in the Greater Toronto Area.

An Urban Living Centre in the GTA

The visionary future for downtown Markham will see a bustling downtown core in the centre of the city with 106,000 residents and 72,000 jobs. There are plans for a new civic square, library, community centre, and performing arts centre. These additions would make downtown Markham one of the highest density urban centres in the Greater Toronto Area.

All-Day, 15 Minute Train Service

Significant upgrades are being made to the Unionville GO Station, with the addition of a second track, new tunnels and shelters, and 286 new parking spots. In the coming years, the entire train line will be upgraded to include two-way, all-day service every 15 minutes, making it extremely convenient to commute to and from downtown Toronto.

New Markham Trails

The Rouge Valley Trail is also being extended throughout the area. This urban walking and biking path will wind from the Rouge River Community Centre, through Main Street Unionville, and extend all the way to Woodbine, adding several kilometres.

York University Markham Campus

The York University Markham Campus also recently opened. This campus is a short walk from the downtown Markham core and is a new destination for secondary schooling in the Greater Toronto Area. The campus has welcomed 400 new students this past year and will accommodate up to 4,200 in the coming years.
